Where’s Hollywood? Beloved Miami Seaquarium Dolphin Reportedly Deceased

Hollywood shows her amazing spirit despite 35 years of captivity at Miami Seaquarium

Sad news is being reported that Hollywood, a female bottlenose dolphin who has resided at Miami Seaquarium since her capture in 1975 has died. According to Marine Mammal Inventory Reports (MMIR) from the National Marine Fisheries Service, Hollywood, age 40, was captured on 05-19-1975 at the estimated age of 5 years old and has been entertaining guests at Miami Seaquarium for some 35 years.

The Orca Project has been told that she delivered a stillborn calf in March and never fully recovered from that ordeal. Until recently, she was housed with her tank mates Samantha and J.J. in the Top Deck Pool, where according to park staff, dolphins are sent to “retire”. But several weeks ago Hollywood was reportedly moved to Dolphin Harbor, an area that is off limits and out of view of park guests. We are not sure how long she survived in Dolphin Harbor… as it’s reported that Hollywood may have died as long as 2 weeks ago.

Miami Seaquarium has yet to acknowledge her death and would neither confirm nor deny the reports during calls to their office on Thursday. Messages left for the marine park’s staff have gone unreturned and visitors asking about her status on Miami Seaquarium’s FaceBook site had their posts removed.

UPDATE from THE ORCA PROJECT: On October 11, 2010, Miami Seaquarium’s Animal Training Department returned a previous telephone call and confirmed Hollywood’s passing. On November 03, 2010 The Orca Project received a copy of Miami Seaquarium’s Marine Mammal Inventory Report (MMIR) from NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Hollywood’s cause of death is listed as SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA. She died on September 15, 2010 . The Orca Project has requested copies of the necropsy report from NMFS and will post an update when received…. Rest in Peace Hollywood.

Hollywood 2

A single look into the eyes of Hollywood afforded thousands of visitors a glimpse into her soul.

Since record keeping began, the MMIR report shows 73 dolphins have died unceremoniously in captivity at Miami Seaquarium… so it is not surprising that Hollywood’s passing would be swept under the rug by MSQ staff. Although they put forth the public view that their captive marine mammals are “family” it is clear that these slaves to entertainment are nothing more than disposable money-making assets, not worthy of recognition.

Here at The Orca Project, we believe the loss of Hollywood IS worth mentioning and her life IS worth celebrating. Please feel free to share your favorite memories of her… and feel free to mourn her loss. Rest in peace Hollywood… you are not forgotten.

Here is a beautiful video tribute to Hollywood made by 124yuppers on YouTube. Thank you 124yuppers… from The Orca Project and friends of Hollywood!

Note: If you have a favorite picture of Hollywood… we’d like to see it. Please send it to webmaster@theorcaproject.com to have it included in a slideshow presentation commemorating her life.

It’s obvious Miami Seaquarium have something to hide, otherwise they wouldn’t be saying the same thing they always say in replies to the containment of the animals, their health, Lolita’s tank. This place should be shut down, should have been for a long time. Seeing Lolita in that swimming pool is heatbreaking. It makes me sick that they see nothing wrong with that. Denial they are in. They need to make money, that’s all they care about, always will.

    Please everyone!

Let this reignite the passion in you to fight for Lolita! Please don’t let her be forgotten. Send letters, emails, post on your Facebook and MySpace, tweet, protest when you get the opportunity! Boycott Coca Cola and Tropicana which I believe sponsor MSQ. Let them know why you are boycotting them! Here is the contact info for Arthur Hertz who owns MSQ:

    ahertz@msq.cc
    phone 305-361-5705 fax 305-365-0075

Just a little FYI, Mr. Hertz is suing BP in direct relation to how the oil spill will be affecting MSQ, specifically Lolita’s dilapidated tank. I wonder how much of the winnings if any will actually go to build Lolita a tank that will accomodate her size?

We can’t give up on fighting for her freedom!

I learned about Hollywood’s death through one individual that posted her comment in another blog. That’s how I found this link. Even though I did not get the chance to know Hollywood personally, I am deeply saddened to hear about the mistreatment/negligence that she received while she was alive. So many wild-caught dolphins have already endured similar experiences while in captivity, and their enslavement for the pleasure of humans is something that these beautiful cetaceans should not have to experience! Every time a wild-caught dolphin ends his/her life in captivity, it is truly a victory since he/she gets to experience freedom on the other side. So, rest in peace, dear Hollywood, as well as others that had gone before her. Hollywood and the other beloved ones are now free!

The Hertz family should be ashamed of themselves! Like father, like son! I for one would love to see Wometco go under, than finally Lolita could be set free!!

Awwww very sad news, rest in peace now you’re no longer in captivity.
I’d sure like to know where this “Sea Aquarium” obtains their dolphins from, hmmm???!!!!
I refuse to brainwash my own childrn into thinking that these captive creatures are safe and happy in “fish bowls” !!!
    Inhumane damn it …

Miami Seaquarium blocks people from commenting on their page once they start asking “controversial” questions… such as: when is Lolita going to get a bigger tank? … Ridiculous!

There is NO EDUCATIONAL VALUE in seeing dolphins and orcas splash the crowd, bob their heads to music, and jumping through hoops.

I will not support this place this sorry excuse for an “educational” facility.

Very sad that Miami will not answer your calls. Frustrating that so many of us cannot voice our concerns on any pro-captivity sites. Who will speak for the innocent who are exploited for sheer greed?
Why would one of you be thrown out of a seaprison for voicing concerns about the health of an orca (toki/lolita ) earlier.
Is it proper to continue to brainwash children to aspire to be “whale trainers” when the finest trainer in last 20 years was killed through no fault of her own?

What i can say about Holly… I adore her, her passing has crushed me… I saw her life drifting away little by little i treid to avoid reality… I tried to lie to myself and not accept that i was going to lose her.. I didnt even get a chance to say good bye. She was so aburptly taken from the top deck tank the last thing i told her was Im sorry.. I was telling her i am sorry for the life shes living, and because i wasnt able to free her. But now that I’m sorry means so much more. I am sorry i didnt fight harder, I am sorry i didnt say good bye, I am sorry that she was suffering in silence… I will NEVER forget Hollywood and i will not stop till i free her calf luna and the rest of her family… I owe her that much!!!! RIP My little Hurricane Hollywood.. I love you

Even if I did not get to know Hollywood personally, your sentiments brought tears to my eyes. Hollywood will always live in you – right in your heart and mind. Just focus on the fact that she is no longer suffering in captivity and that she is now free.

This comes as such crushing news. Last year, I noticed that they had almost completely cut Hollywood from the Top Deck show. They had the other dolphins introduced and leaping about, on command, and Hollywood just waited for food at the platform. (She was not given any). I also noticed she had a wound on her tail, right above her flukes, with algae sprouting from it.

I reported her wounds to the USDA and they dismissed it, never even saying if it was being treated or not, just that it was “acceptable.”

    BOYCOTT MIAMI SEAQUARIUM!!

A big AMEN to your thoughtful comment! It really hurts that beloved Hollywood had been treated in such a way! The MSQ (Miami Seaquarium) will have to pay for its many years full of iniquities!

Seems like I’m blocked from leaving a note on the Seaquarium’s site 🙂
My comments about Lolita weren’t really nice.
    RIP Hollywood, finally freedom.

R.I.P precious little one. Now you’re free to swim the oceans with your family.
You can feel the cool water rushing past you and the sunshine on your face.
Play and jump and spin. You are now truly free.
